A Maharashtrian marriage biodata (also called a Marathi biodata or वैवाहिक परिचय पत्र) follows a format shaped by the cultural traditions of Maharashtra. The structure is mostly the same across communities, but each one, Brahmin, Maratha, CKP, Koli, and others, has its own expectations around gotra, kul, and family lineage.

Maharashtra has a diverse set of communities, each with their own matrimonial traditions:
Brahmin communities: Deshastha, Kokanastha (CKP/Chitpavan), Saraswat, Karhade
Kshatriya/Maratha: The largest community in the state
CKP (Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhu): Urban, education-focused community
96 Kuli Marathas: A traditional Maratha sub-community
Mahar/Scheduled Castes: Growing middle-class with active matrimonial networks
Koli, Agari, Bhandari: Coastal and farming communities
The basic biodata structure works for all of these. What changes are the specific fields each community cares about, like gotra, kul, and kuldevi.

Gotra is very important; same-gotra marriage is strictly avoided
Mention kul (clan name like Kulkarni, Deshpande, Joshi, Bhat)
Kuldevi details are expected
Kundali matching is standard
Some families also trace pravara (lineage beyond gotra)
Commonly found in Konkan region and Pune/Mumbai
High emphasis on education and career
Urban, professional community where education and career are top priorities
Gotra expected; matches usually stay within CKP
Modern outlook, nuclear families are common
Concentrated in Mumbai, Pune, and Thane
Mention kul (Patil, Deshmukh, Bhosle, Chavan, Jadhav, More, Nimbalkar)
Kuldevi is very important, include it
Gotra is less commonly mentioned than in Brahmin biodatas but still included
96 Kuli distinction matters for conservative families
Include gotra (Bharadwaj, Kaundinya, Vasishtha, etc.)
Predominantly found along Konkan coast
English-medium education is common, so the biodata is often in English
Families from Gujarati communities share some of these customs around gotra and kuldevi, so the formats overlap in places.
| Audience | Language |
|---|---|
| Traditional families, smaller cities | Marathi preferred |
| Urban Mumbai/Pune families | English is fine |
| Matrimonial bureaus (Vivah Kendra) | Marathi often preferred |
| Online platforms | English with Marathi honorifics (Sh./Smt.) |
| NRI matches | English |
For the widest reach, create your biodata in English but keep Marathi honorifics and cultural terms intact.

What is the difference between Gotra and Kul in Maharashtrian biodata? Gotra is the Vedic sage lineage (e.g., Bharadwaj, Kashyap). Kul is the family clan or surname group (e.g., Kulkarni, Patil, Deshpande). Both matter in Maharashtrian matrimonial matching, especially for Brahmin communities.
Is Kuldevi mandatory in a Maharashtrian biodata? It's strongly expected in traditional families, especially Maratha and Brahmin. Many families will specifically ask for it. Include it if you know it.
What should a Maharashtrian biodata include that a generic biodata does not? Kul, Kuldevi, Pravara (for some Brahmin families), and specific gotra. These are Maharashtra-specific expectations that go beyond the standard format.
Should I write the biodata in Marathi or English? For traditional audiences and matrimonial bureaus, Marathi works better. For urban or NRI audiences, English is fine. Most families accept either these days.
Is a two-page biodata acceptable for Maharashtrian matrimonial? One page is standard. For senior professionals or families with complex backgrounds, two pages is acceptable. Three is too many.
