Biodata and resume are not the same thing. Here's what makes them different, when to use each, and why using a resume as a marriage biodata is a bad idea.

In India, biodata and resume get used interchangeably all the time. But they're actually two very different documents made for very different purposes.
Here's what you need to know so you don't mix them up.
The word "biodata" is short for "biographical data." In India, it specifically means a document that covers your personal, family, educational, and career background for matrimonial purposes.
A marriage biodata includes:
Personal details (name, age, height, religion, caste)
Family background (parents' names and occupations, siblings)
Astrological details (gotra, nakshatra, manglik status)
Education and profession
Hobbies and personality
Partner expectations
Contact details and photo
It's personal. It tells the story of who you are as a whole person, not just as an employee. For a full breakdown of what belongs in each section, check our biodata content guide.
A resume (or CV) is a career-focused document for job applications.
It includes:
Professional summary
Work experience (company, role, dates, achievements)
Education
Technical skills
Certifications and awards
References
A resume is entirely about your career value. Nothing personal.

No. This is a common mistake, and here's why it doesn't work:
Missing personal details. Resumes don't include religion, caste, family background, or astrological info that families look for.
Wrong tone. A resume is achievement-focused. Families want to understand the person, not just the career.
No family information. Families want to know about your parents, siblings, and values.
No expectations. Resumes don't say anything about what you want in a partner.
No community context. Resumes don't show cultural compatibility signals.
Generally no, for the opposite reasons. A matrimonial biodata has personal information (caste, religion, age, family background, photo) that:
Is irrelevant to your qualifications
Could expose you to discrimination
Is not appropriate in a hiring context
For jobs, always use a resume.
One exception: in parts of India, "biodata" is sometimes used loosely to mean "resume" in a work context. In those cases, a simple one-page summary of education and experience is what they mean.
For tips on writing well in either format, see our biodata tips guide.
A good marriage biodata:
Is one or two pages max
Uses a clear, attractive template with good typography
Includes a recent photograph
Has clearly labeled sections (Personal, Education, Family, etc.)
Is saved as a PDF for sharing
A plain Word document or an email listing your details isn't going to cut it anymore. Families expect a well-formatted document.

What is the difference between a CV and a biodata? A CV is a detailed career document used for academic or senior positions. A biodata for marriage is a personal document for matrimonial purposes. Completely different things.
Should I say "biodata" or "resume" when applying for jobs in India? Use "resume" or "CV" for jobs. Saying "biodata" in a job context can create confusion.
What format should a marriage biodata be in? PDF. It keeps the formatting intact on every device and looks clean. Word documents can look different on different computers.
Is it okay to share a biodata on WhatsApp? Definitely. WhatsApp is the most common way biodatas get shared in India now. SmartBiodata generates a WhatsApp-ready link and PDF for exactly this purpose.
